Laurence was born into a coffee-growing family and began farming at a young age. After marrying, she and her husband started their own farm using seedlings from local coffee farms. During the Rwandan genocide, she became a widow and fled with her children to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), where she supported them by weaving and selling baskets.
Upon returning to Rwanda, Laurence found her property destroyed and had to rebuild from scratch while caring for her children. She restarted her coffee plantation and joined the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, becoming a leader among other genocide survivor farmers. Laurence also joined the Rambagirakawa women’s group, helping her secure a stable income by reaching a wider market for her baskets.
